Chapter 17 — The Good Steward

Nona

Lachesis needed twenty-four hours to get her affairs in order and have a plane flight arranged. And I needed twenty-four hours to cool myself down. Preferably before the energy I was giving off blessed one of my sister’s tenants with a spontaneous pregnancy or a heart attack. I’m sure neither would be welcomed. I stayed in my condo the following day, with Nikki as my only companion.

Traveling to Alaska was going to be a long journey, and I didn’t plan on showing my face until we left… to keep from running into Mateo alone again.

Atropos lived in a remote area, far from people, so it will take days of travel from here. That would be enough interaction as it was.

The second morning, I sent Nikki back home to monitor things and to check on the piglets… giving her strict instructions not to roast them, just make sure Linus was treating them properly. I didn’t dare ask her to come with us. Getting her to leave Georgia to come to Florida had been enough. Mountain nymphs never left their mountain territories intentionally, so going across the country was out of the question. Once we were with Atropos, we wouldn’t need her, anyway. With our power fully restored, she would be more helpful at home.

Today, I was in the 1950s with a blue and white polka dot dress that came to the knees and flared out like it had crinoline underneath. It was fun and mood uplifting. My untied tresses hung in big, wavy curls, like a masterpiece, challenging the current humidity to displace them. The heels of my tan Mary Jane shoes clacked on the floor as I made my way to the main eating area. My sister held large buffet style meals for her tenants weekly and used a large restaurant style space on the second floor to host the events. But today, she made sure the floor was empty.

A stainless-steel industrial grade kitchen at one end of the area had a view of the round black marble tabletops spread throughout the room. Floor to ceiling curtainless windows along the one wall allowed for maximum sunlight and views of the outside ocean.

Stunning. Although I much preferred the country and soft wood over cityscapes and cold stone, I still appreciated the attraction.

The empty room made spotting my sister seated at a table closest to the kitchen easy, and I joined her there.

“Good Sunrise. I trust you have enjoyed your rooms?” She greeted me as I sat down.

“I always enjoy your hospitality… you are the best.” I flashed a brief smile and signaled to a waiter, to bring me coffee. He was another Lare called in for my benefit. Lachesis didn’t want me to fry her staff while they were on duty. “You must visit my home one day, so I can host you… if only for a day.”

“I know of your pet souls, youth. I don’t need to see them too.” She took a sip of tea from a porcelain cup.
